DAVID DE GEA HAS BEEN PROCLAIMED CHAMPION OF SPAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME IN A ROW, AND THE FOURTH TIME IN FIVE YEARS, AFTER IMPOSING HIS AUTHORITY AND TAKING VICTORY IN THE SIXTH RACE OF THE 2007 SPANISH MOTORCYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP, IN WHICH THE BLUSENS BQR RACING TEAM HAS OBTAINED ITS FIRST ONE-TWO OF THE YEAR WITH JOSEP SARDA'S EXCELLENT SECOND PLACE, HIS BEST RESULT OF THE SEASON SO FAR AND HIS THIRD PODIUM.
David de Gea has once again shown that he is the best rider in the Spanish Motorcycle Championship winning his third race of the year and with it his third Spanish Championship in a row (2005, 2006 and 2007) since signing for the Blusens BQR motorcycle racing team in 2004, the year in which he was runner-up. He had already obtained his first championship the previous year, and he has won four out of the last five: an irrefutable supremacy, and one which makes him the most successful rider in the competition. With this new victory David makes a triumphal exit from the Spanish Championship, and next year will face a new challenge in his sporting career: the World Supersport Championship. His team-mate, Josep Sardà, helped to round off the Blusens BQR festival, with his third podium of the season and his first second-place, giving Cardedeu’s team its first one-two of the season. The Catalan rider now looks to hold onto his fourth place in the general classification (he is on 656 points, three 3 ahead of Sergio Fuertes) and he hopes to consolidate it in next week’s final race of the season at Jerez. Filling in for Jordí Carchano, Enrique Rocamora had a great race; he had been six months without a race outing, and although he was a little bit off the pace, he still managed to get into the top ten, finishing ninth.
For David, “It’s been a perfect weekend. I was fastest on the practice days and in the warm-up, and we clocked up the fastest lap during the race, too. I'm really happy because I'm leaving the Spanish Motorcycle Championship as Champion, and I'm turning the page on a chapter of my life that has been both enjoyable and difficult at the same time, and I'm doing so in the best possible way. It's my fourth title in five years and I would like to thank my family, Raúl, the team, Dunlop, and all those that have supported and helped me over these years. With the change of bike, the year was always going to be difficult; it was a stiff challenge because the team has always raced with another bike and we’ve had to get to know the Suzuki. But I think we've worked really well; we developed it quickly, and right from the off we've been up there with the Yamaha, which is a bike my rivals already knew. We would get to the race tracks and everything was new, but thanks to everybody’s efforts we’ve managed to keep our noses ahead in all the races, and now to attain our objective of winning our third consecutive championship. Next season I’ll be racing in the World Supersport Championship, a new challenge for me; one which I find very exciting and which gives me extra motivation. And I think I can do really well.”
In Supersport, not only was Russell Gómez unable to put any pressure on the leaders in this class after crossing the line in sixth place, he has also dropped a place in the overall classification; he is now third, and has lost a bit more ground on the new leader, the Englishman, Graeme Gowland (eight points ahead), and his chances of overall victory are fading. The Championship is extremely tight and, with one race to go at Jerez next week, there are four riders on 16 points who can still take the title. After a great race in Albacete, his Blusens BQR team-mate, Dani Rivas, was never really comfortable throughout the race, and finally came in 14th, picking up one point and remaining in 12th place in the overall classification on 21 points. After two full practice days, Eloy Fernández, came off on the third lap and couldn't put an end to his bad run; he hasn't managed to finish a single race, something he must aim to do at Jerez, as it is his last opportunity this season.
With regard to the 125 cc class, Scott Redding had a commanding win in the sixth race of the Spanish Motorcycle Championship, notching up his second consecutive victory of the season, and putting himself in a good position to challenge for title, with just one race to go, as he is now second in the overall classification on 90 points, 13 points off the leader, his Blusens BQR team-mate Stefan Bradl, who today finished fourth. In a disputed action, he was overtaken on the last bend by the third Blusens rider, Efrén Vázquez, who with this new top-three finish, his third of the year (2nd in Montmeló and 2nd in Albacete) keeps his options of finishing the championship in the top three open; mathematically he could still win the championship, as with 79 points he is 24 points behind the leader, but his possibilities are remote. With Scott’s victory and Efrén’s third place, Blusens BQR has kept up its run in the last three races of having two riders on the podium, but they still haven't managed to get the first one-two-three in the history of the Championship.
